The geomagnetic observatory Sinji vrh (SNV) was built and made the first successful test submissions to INTERMAGNET in April 2012. The major problem we were facing since then were the atmospheric discharges that were frequently ruining the equipment. The highest measured amplitude in the region was 416.28 kA while one of the strikes that destroyed our electronics hit 3.92 km away with the amplitude of 178 kA.
Other challenges involved budget cuts, frequent changes in personnel, vandalism and power line outages that sometimes even lasted for weeks.
While most observatories are relatively small, have very similar needs and could probably use the same software and very similar hardware setups, there is very little software being shared between them and new observatories often need to keep reinventing the wheel. When we started working on major hardware and data acquisition upgrades, we decided to release all our hardware designs and software under open source licenses. We feel that observatories around the globe could develop faster and operate with lower costs when sharing more code. The usage of open source means less strain on projects as they can be viewed less like a „black box” that will probably never be opened again, but more like a milestone that will be evaluated after some time, possibly adapted, and that will generate experiences about its good and bad solutions for next milestone or some other projects.
We will present the development of intelligent distributed power supply modules with better surge protection, better stability, better redundancy and less magnetic noise. It is capable of monitoring the absence of mains power and has the ability to progressively shut down the equipment when the battery voltage drops below a certain threshold.

Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) is a lightweight messaging protocol designed to transfer data on unreliable networks with low bandwidth or expensive data transfer rates. It is open, simple, efficient and suitable for devices with low power consumption and limited resources. It is based on TCP/IP for network connectivity; it needs a central “broker” and can have any number of clients publishing the data to “subscribers”. We will explain how this protocol can be used in geomagnetic measurements to reliably transfer the data to multiple locations over unreliable internet connection, with minimal data traffic overhead. At the same time it can be used to automatically synchronize the data between data loggers when internet connectivity goes down.
